Learning outcomes:
After successfully completing this module, students will be able to carry out a sensor technology development task. Students will either work on their own idea or a given task, which involves planning, carrying out, evaluating and documenting the entire project as part of a team of several students. They will practice applying the skills they have learned while using real-world engineering tools and application programs. Students will be able to implement a project including the design and characterization of a specific sensor, its realization and cost planning and its comparison with commercially available products.
The modules “Business English for Mechatronics Engineers”, “Technical English for Mechatronics Engineers”, “Applying for an Engineering Job”, as well as “Technical Reports and Presentations for Mechatronics Engineers” should be seen in conjunction with one another. The goal is for the students to develop their English language skills in the professional and technical field from the desired entry level B1 to B2 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages within the course of the respective modules.
The component "Technical Reports and Presentation for Mechatronics Engineers" is part of the "Mechatronics Project in English". In it, students work on technical projects, which they present in English at the end of the semester. After successfully completing this module, they will be able to understand technical texts on their respective project topic and actively apply the technical vocabulary they have learned. Building on the knowledge acquired in the module "Technical English for Mechatronics Engineers", students will be able to present their project knowledge in an English presentation. They will be able to present and comment on graphics and measurement results in English. Furthermore, they will be able to document their project results in the form of an English project report.

Module content:
The sensor technology project was developed from an existing practical course on sensor technology. In the past, 9 different experiments were set up in three laboratories. This practical course was converted into a project format, i.e. the students no longer carry out and record the respective experiments according to a precisely defined plan, but work on one topic over the entire semester. First, students work through relevant literature, plan experimental setups and build them in the workshop, conduct experiments and draw conclusions from their results for use later in the course. Project topics can be selected from the following experiments:
1.        Pressure sensor technology
2.        Water in oil sensor
3.        Position and distance sensors
4.        Light barriers and light bands, smoke detectors
5.        Light source qualification (power, spectrum, beam profile)
6.        Triangulation sensor design
7.        Force or load sensor design
8.        Temperature and flow sensor technology
9.        Vacuum measurement technology and mass spectroscopy
 
Here is a concrete example for a project on the topic of "Force or load sensor design":
-  Review of selected literature on force and load sensor design
-  Creation of a market analysis of available, commercial sensors
-  Planning and pre-calculation (simulation) of a sensor setup and suitable measuring equipment for installation in an existing load machine
-  Application of bondable strain gauges (strain gauges)
-  Planning and execution of measurement series, calibration of the sensor and temperature errors
-  Development of suggestions for improvement and feasibility check
-  Measurement of all necessary data and creation of a sensor data sheet
-  Creation of a cost calculation for the production of a specific quantity
-  Creation of a final report with project documentation
 
Content of “Technical Reports and Presentation for Mechatronics Engineers”:
The content is geared to specific tasks in close coordination with representatives from the technical subjects dealt with in the project:
 
        Development of technical vocabulary for current projects
        Reading and understanding technical texts on sensors and actuators
        Explaining procedures and processes
        Describing and explaining measuring instruments and measuring processes
        Interpreting and describing measurement curves and data
        Deepening the structures and means of speech for English language presentations
        Practice presentations on technical topics
        Introduction to writing technical texts (writing strategies and means of speech)
        Writing a project report

Teaching methods/Media:
Independent project work in groups of 2 to 3 students.
The learning goals will be achieved through integrated training of the four basic skills (listening comprehension, reading comprehension, speaking and writing) supported by the use of multimedia. Communication training will take place within the framework of learner-centered lessons in the multimedia computer language laboratory, in group work and during the project.
